Hong Kong format pick up for Action Time

UK gameshow producer-distributor Action Time has picked up a new Asian format from the 28-year-old Hong Kong-based Robert Chua Production House.

Carlton-owned Action Time has walked away with distribution rights to the big money format Everyone Wins outside Asia. The HK version of the show is to due to air on the local terrestrial TVB early next year.

The 60' studio format has contestants pitting wits against each other in various ways, based on answering questions the quickest to win the most points. The format's interactive twist is that their scorelines form a stream of Lucky Numbers that players at home have to match to win prizes themselves.

The move confirms the view among certain sections of the industry that the Far East will be the source of the next generation of global formats. The deal "is going to give, for the first time, an Asian-created quiz format a greater reach to TV stations worldwide," said Asian TV veteran Chua, founder of China Entertainment Broadcast.

The Action Time/Chua deal follows a recent restructure at the distributor under which the UK outfit lost its founders Stephen Leahy and Trish Kinane, who quit to set up their own format outfit Splash.

Action Time consequently axed 18 of its UK staff and refocused on its international business. "Acquiring Everyone Wins is part of our ongoing strategy to expand our catalogue with new formats," said Action Time's director of international business Caroline Beaton.
