Anatomy of our experience at X Media Labs

For those who haven't had a chance to participate in an X media lab session, i hope this is helps you understand what goes on.

Sunday
An informal introduction to the mentors and other participants through cocktails and dinner at the Renaissance's Velvet Lounge. A good opportunity to catch up with the whole group in an informal setting. Some of the companies involved with projects were Adlabs, Shemaroo, Yolk (Singapore) Trine.

Monday

Started off with presentations by all the participants as well as some of the mentors. This was followed by a scheduling session where everyone gets between an hour to ninety minutes with each of the mentors they can schedule in.

Most of the mentors were from a wide range of disciplines from user interface design to film production. So it covered a lot of bases for any project that fit in with the labs objectives. it also offered the opportunity to interact and get one on one input from giants of the industry (pictured below the participants as well as mentors)

Tuesday & Wednesday
We had some fantastic sessions lined up with amazing people such as
Tom Kennedy (active in the media industry & currently producing a movie in Australia)
Robert Chua (founder of Interactive Tv in HK)
Matt Costello (script & game writer for Doom 3 amongst others)
Isaac Kerlow (animator, director and dean of NTU in Sg)
A.K. Madhavan ( head of Crest Animation )
Shekhar Kapur (director of Bandit Queen, Elizabeth and its sequel The Golden Age)

The amount of advice, input and experience we received from the mentors was simply staggering. From tinkering with the script, to character designs, marketing ideas, production techniques.

All this learning was compressed down into two days of intense discussion and dialogs.

The usual one on one sessions works by you explaining the project, its key points and its objectives, to the mentor who then chips in through pointed questions or suggestions.

What this does is make you think very clearly and very dynamcially about your own project and lets you see it in a different light. Like true mentors they make you think and come up with the answers yourself rather than just hand them out to you.

Not only do you learn about your project and the industry but it also helps you formulate a critical process which you can then apply to future projects.

Finally

Brendan Harkin & Megan Elliott did a splendid job with the whole process and allowed us to have a first rate professional as well as personal experience.

Everything was managed well and they were on hand to ensure everything was co-ordinated and nothing was lacking.

Beyond the professional it was truly great to meet such an amazing collection of people and make new friends.

I am sure the mentors as well as X media lab will be back soon.

Until then, they have good friends here at Illusion Interactive & Mumbai, wishing them the best of luck!

Animation & Gaming India 2007

Hi,

Back from the India Animation summit where we were one of the 6 finalists at the Super pitch. Unfortunately we couldnt achieve the maximum as my slides wouldnt work and our backup laptop decided to fail at the last moment.

I had to wing the presentation with some basic concept art, unfortunate because i thought we had a real shot at winning, but such is life.

I wish to congratulate Banzai, Maharajah Cowboy and the Mundu Hunt, they were fabulous and deserve their win.

Met some very interesting people and saw some good work.

Good Stuff !
